Local Schools Hit the Road to be Crowned 2008 Redlands
Bicycle Classic School Duel Champions
Redlands, Calif. - April 5, 2008 - Tomorrow's local
champions came together to get a taste of fast paces
and friendly competition. More than 20 local schools
lined up at the start of the 2008 Redlands Bicycle Classic,
presented by PossAbilities, criterium starting line today
to earn points for their school. The school with the
most participants won the glory of the School Duel Championship
and the honors of the coveted School Duel trophy.
The School Duel is scored separately based on a system
that rewards mass participation instead of merely focusing
on individual success. The event allows students in the
community to get involved in a nationally sanctioned
bike race and enables them to show school spirit and
promote healthy activities outside their campus with
fellow Redlands students.
High school students road on the full 1.2 mile criterium
course, while younger students raced on a shortened version.
Mariposa won the elementary school division; Redlands
Christian for middle schools, and Redlands East Valley
took first for the high school division. When Race Announcer
Larry Longo asked race participant 5-year-old Finn Welsh,
who attends Redlands Playschool, how he got ready for
the race, he replied, "I eat right and I prepare."
